Fuzz Wars, Round 3 – Less Talk And More Playing
As promised- here’s round 3 of Fuzz Wars, and it will not disappoint. In this review, Jonathan and I feature three boutique fuzz pedals that have a lot of internet buzz, as well as one legendary fuzz pedal. First up is Devi-Ever’s Shoe Gazer, followed by Z. Vex’s Fuzz Factory which is proceeded by the legendary Univox Super Fuzz. The final of the four is Earthquaker Devices’ Hoof Reaper Octave Fuzz.
This last round of the first installment of Fuzz Wars (with special guest Jonathan Hischke) ends here, but will be followed by new installments of Fuzz Wars with other notable guests who will discuss and showcase their favorite fuzz pedals.
I hope you stay tuned for more Fuzz Wars!

I can add a Malekko B:Assmaster, Prescription Electronics Depth Charge, Crowther Audio Prunes and Custard, and a Sansamp GT-2 to your list, if you wish. I’m not that far from LA…hell, I’m practically next door.
Hoof Reaper is just perfect !!
That Hoof Reaper is outta control! Goddamn!
Awesome! Juan, check out the Wendigo by Tortuga Effects. You’ll love it.
Thank you professors Alderete and Hischke for this really usefull comparative analysis.
Too much talk for me
Good Stuff Gentlemen!
The Super Fuzz = Amazing! Its the only fuzz I use– however I have been considering picking up a Crowther Audio Prunes & Custard.
One of my favorite fuzz tones is Michael Rutherford’s tone on the “Lamb Lies …” record. Supposedly he used a Marshall Supa Fuzz. Have you guys ever played through one? Peep this tasty little deal on eBay… only $5000… oops… I mean $4,999.00! Maybe we can all go in on it and trade off weekends, haha.

Lovin’ the vids!
Would love to get your opinion on the Jupiter Fuzz from Walrus Audio
Fuzz the fuck up! Loving these fuzz wars!
These are all awesome! The shoe gazer seems like it’d fit in the mix nicely. But damn… That SUPERFUZZ is superb on its own.
Thanks for the post Juan and Jon.

The Intro is a combo of EH Bass Micro Synth with square wave max’d and a phaser. The bass solo midway through is the Boss ODB-3 modded by @thepedalguy with the wet signal max’d. The mod gives warmth the pedal desperately needed.
ENJOY

The octave on the Hoof Reaper is the best analog octave I’ve heard. It screaaams! Praise to Jamie for some key changes he did to pronounce that octave out.
HOLY MOLY!!! I’ve been going through these and getting more and more stoked each time! The format you’ve got going here is AWESOME with 4 pedals and once and giving your thoughts and reactions. Your reaction to the hoof reaper turning on makes me want to go get one!
i am kicking myself for getting rid of my eau claire thunder now in a [bad] trade gotta get that sucker back!
Thanks for doing this!!! Rock on!
The original superfuzz is sooooo sick. The magic is that its frequency doubler circuit generates square waves, by some weird perversion of a differential pair circuit topology run with ridiculous gain. Others, like the octavia, use a precision full wave recifier; which doesn’t have a saturation characteristic. Definitely a different flavor of fuzz.
