Fuzz Wars, Round 2: Jonathan Hischke’s Reviews his Favorite Fuzz Pedals
The second installment of Pedals And Effects‘ First Annual Fuzz Wars features Jonathan Hischke’s (Broken Bells, Dot Hacker) current favorites. He really loves fuzz pedals as much as I do and his choices definitely fit his bass style. Fuzz pedals that get really crazy with filtering and over the top fuzz are ones he tends to like more than others.
First up is the Boss Hyper Fuzz – unfortunately, this fuzz pedal is no longer made but is very versatile, so we recommend you hit eBay and find one! Jonathan then showcases his Blackout Effectors Musket. This is a fuzz box that I don’t currently own but after watching Jonathan play through his, I know I have to get one. Next, Jonathan showcases the Fairfield Circuitry Four Eyes Crossover Fuzz which he loves for its wide ranging filter and subtle to giant fuzz abilities. We finished up with a fuzz pedal that is so much more than just a fuzz box- Pigtronix Disnortion (featured before on Pedals And Effects) comes with overdrive, fuzz and an octavia added, and its versatility is unparalleled thanks to these three functions in one box.
Part three of Fuzz Wars is complete and will come next week; part four will feature more friends and their favorite fuzzes- so stay tuned to Pedals And Effects!

How awesome is that Hyper Fuzz? Thats sounds awesome, I think its my favourite of the four, but the Fairfield expression setting seems really useful.
Loving these fuzz comparisons. Falling for that Musket, though I’m also interested the various iterations of their Dual Fuzz. Also looking hard at the JHS 4-wheeler. Maybe even the MXR Bass Fuzz Deluxe as a more economical option. Hopefully they’ll make an appearance in future installments.
Wow, really impressed with the two rounds so far, may I ask for the Foxx Tone Machine? i would really love to see that pedal in action in this war, see how it handles itself on bass and against other fuzz pedals.
Who knew the Hyper Fuzz would be so cool? So far the Hyper Fuzz, the Sovtek Big Muff, and the Disnortion have been my favorites.
The glorious thing about the Musket, to me, is how it works in a mix. It bolsters everything and makes the whole band sound bigger.
That fairfield fuzz s filter is siiiiick. I was wondering, how do you guys feels about these “gated fuzz” that we see around? Are there some of those fuzzs that would pass the grandiloquent fuzz off war? Cheers and santé to you both.
